Some Canadian News....

Here are some interesting headlines that have caught my attention recently:

Montreal Gazette - Man says Diefenbaker's brain could prove paternity: "The man who says he could be John Diefenbaker's son says he has some new leads that might prove his case, including a tip that the former prime minister's brain is preserved somewhere." Holy Crap.



The Toronto Star - NDP’s Paul Dewar: ‘Taxes are a means to an end’ Typical socialist ramblings. Aside from the fact that Dewar wants to end "tax havens" and "tax loopholes" (read: your money belongs to the State), Dewar also wants to raise income taxes for "high earners." What constitutes a high earner? Anyone who didn't vote for the NDP, save for well-paid Union leaders, of course. So let's get this straight, as a possible NDP leader Dewar wants to punish those avoiding taxes by making them pay taxes. Then he wants to raise the taxes on those playing by the rules who submit honest tax returns... Sounds like taxation is the end, not the means, to Dewar's idiot policy.

National Post - Why do young people have to foot the bill for Boomer pensions? An excellent article from the Financial Post section of the NP. Gotta love the ending: "So, is the CPP a pyramid scheme? Webster’s dictionary defines a pyramid scheme as “a usually illegal operation in which participants pay to join and profit mainly from payments made by subsequent participants.” I am not a lawyer, but it seems to me that the CPP fits this definition."

Vancouver Sun -Walmart to invest $750M in Canadian operations: Yeah yeah, of course they get state subsidies. But who doesn't these days? And considering all the stupid regulations they have to go through... Congrats, I love Wal-Mart. Not only are they bringing wealth-creating jobs to individuals, but they also offer great products at a great price.

National Post - Andrew Coyne: Caterpillar’s EMD facility never really was ‘our’ plant: A good article to counterbalance all the socialist propaganda coming from The Toronto Star.

The Chronicle Herald - Old Age Security needs reform; panic is not an option: Reform? How about abolition? Let's do it slowly, phasing it out like Ron Paul's plan for Social Security. There's no point in prolonging this, eventually Canada will have to meet its debt obligations.

Yahoo News - Bill C-11 could bring SOPA-like online piracy laws to Canada: Sorry, I should have posted about this two weeks ago when I read about it. But there's nothing to say that you probably don't already know. The State will stop at nothing to curtail internet freedom. It's time to start learning computer programming if you haven't already. Computer language will be the weapons of the 21st century, hackers will be the guerrillas. Like Che Guevara said (I know, a murdering communist) "When the forces of oppression come to maintain themselves in power against established law, peace is considered already broken."*

Bloomberg Business Week - Royal Bank of Canada Cuts Nixon’s Pay to C$10.1 Million: Keep your eyes on RBC. I've always maintained Canadian Banks will eventually fail. I could be wrong, I don't have much proof to go by other than... oh yeah: this. Of course, secret bailouts and central bank maneuvering could always keep the Canadian Bank Stability myth alive.

Bloomberg Business Week - Bank of Canada’s Carney Says Volcker Rule Might Damage Markets: This is about something else, but another "Volcker Rule" (that of high interest rates) is an excellent solution to our current mess.

Canadian Business - Bank of Canada governor says U.S. economy may never fully recover: Not unless Ron Paul becomes President. What's interesting about this article is the last line, "Last week, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty warned that he could take action to prevent prices from skyrocketing, particularly in the Toronto and Vancouver markets." Price controls? Oh boy, I think I might start a podcast where I rant for 20 minutes a day. Sounds a lot easier (and potentially more satisfying) than blogging.

CBC: Harper lands in China looking for business: It'd be better if a bunch of entrepreneurs were heading to China instead. Harper could stay home and dismantle the welfare state.

The Globe and Mail - Iranian regime ‘frightens me,’ Harper says: Harper's Regime frightens me. Sad part is, not only will Canada follow the US into War, but a lot of those ideological repellent Lefties will support the war because Obama is carrying it out.... Anyone care to explain how this is different from Bush's invasion of Iraq?

  1. For most of my life I've been a Leftie, but my recent foray into political and economic theory is swiftly eroding beliefs I never used to question. Don't agree with everything on your blog, but thank you for having a clear, eloquent voice when stating and supporting your opinions. You and Heinlein are right. TANSTAAFL.
